This won’t be a long article, I am not going into all the details. I just want to state a viewpoint. Maybe in the future, I will elaborate and write a more in depth article on this subject. I doubt if I did it now, that it would be unbiased because of my feelings.
I was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1979. This was around the time Robert Mugage came into power. My family moved to South Africa. The future was a little too uncertain, even then. I love Zimbabwe, it is an amazing country, with amazing people. Watching the state of affairs over the past 10 years has been heartbreaking for me. I dreamed of a day I would go back to Zimbabwe, and experience a lifestyle there akin to the lifestyle of my memories, and the stories my parents and family told me.
But this will not happen. Robert Mugabe is the reason. He has single handedly taken something beautiful, the Diamond of Africa…and turned it back into a lump of coal. The land has been stripped bare, he is starving his own people. Lets for a moment forget about the white people of Zimbabwe, and the injustices served upon them. His own people, the black Zimbabwean. The reason for him coming into power in the first place, to help return power to the indigenous people of his country. He forsake them. He is killing them, by starving…by beating…For no other reason than his huge ego, and disregard for anyone but himself. He was given the oppurtunity to do something beautiful with Zimbabwe.
Mugabe is not ignorant. He is well educated (better educated than most Western leaders). He was a teacher. He has no excuse. His personal wealth is immense, and it keeps being added to, in spite of the fact the average earnings of the Zimbabwean is 50USD a year.
This latest debacle, the recent elections, makes me so damn angry. Why is nothing being done to get this excuse for a man out of power? Morgan Tsvangarai deserves an award for the bravery he has shown over the past few years. He has endured beatings and jail for his right to campaign for the right to create a better Zimbabwe, for the right to bring the country back from the brink. It just got too much, and I think he made the only decision available to him, to pull out of the elections. The death of his supporters is just despicable. This is one of many points that outside intervention was needed. At what point does the West stop just using words? Get in there, remove Mugabe from power…
I am a pacifist generally, but I sincerely want Mugabe to die. He deserves nothing less.
